Transcript of the live chat conducted on December 2, 2009 with Manoj Chawla, Executive Senior VP, NIS Academy between 3-4 pm sowmini: How do you see technology help education reach the tier II & III towns in India?
manojchawla: Technology is the key to "distribution of quality education", more so in Tier II and Tier II where the access to qualified faculty is a constraint
Pinky: Is e-learning beneficial? How?
manojchawla: E- learning is a mode of ensuring self paced learning and the greatest benefit is to the participant, wherein he/she can clear concepts and learn as per his abilities. e-learning is a flexible platform, wherein the learning path of each individual can be tailored to their individual learning needs.
Roshni: How do you justify the recent debacle in online CAT exam when the technology was supposed to be full proof?
manojchawla: The CAT debacle cannot be justified, however it is a step towards learning. Infact, the process of adoption of technology is always a path. e.g. the Indian Railways took it's time to stabilise the online e-ticketing system, which we currently take it for granted.
Ghosh: What is the future of online tutoring in India? In what time frame do you see it catching up with traditional tutoring?
manojchawla: Online tutoring, along with all aspects of content management, assessments, and other LMS features make the learning powerful. It will be best applied and made effective with a correct blend of Instrucor facilitated sessions. Traditional tutoring cannot be replaced with online, they co-exist.
Ankur: How do you justify the recent debacle in online CAT exam when the technology was supposed to be full proof?
manojchawla: As I stated, the CAT debacle cannot be justifed. however, this should be taken as a learning. All tests should have been done with more rigour, and back-ups should have been in place.
Gaurav: sir what should government do to make our education system more technology oriented? manojchawla: The Govt has already taken many initiatives in the direction. e.g. egyankosh portal of IGNOU has been in place for some years now (visit www.egyankosh.com). the ITI's are being upgraded with Techmnology enabled services. Even Universities have installed V-SAT for delivery. The Edusat project of ISRO is one such very big example wherein many Universities have been given the infrastructure free of cost on extended C-Band.
Pinky: What is difference between PGDM & PGPM in management education? And which one is best? manojchawla: At school level there is an effort to connect schools with connectivity (broadband) , new It equipments/ computers and creating smart classrooms
Puja: Hello sir I want to ask about current market trend in management field
manojchawla: PGDM and PGPM: they are typically different terminology. one would need to study the curriculum to be able to better comment on the same.
Suman111: Is online management education worthwhile in respect to placement. how credible it is when compared to regular courses?
manojchawla: Thank you Suman. Like in normal/traditional management education, the factors of onl-line education also depend upon the following viz> Quality of Faculty, Quality of Content, Quality of delivery platform, and the quality of the technology partner who brings it live to you.
Tuli: Sir, i have done my media studies, is it necessary for all students to take a management course for a better career..?? is it a add on to your degree?
manojchawla: Further, it is a good platform for Working executives, who wish to utilise the benefit os "Anywhere learning" for their professional growth
Pinky: Can we use distance education for Professional development?
manojchawla: As stated earlier, "Management Studies" opens many options. however, "Media" is a big enough line for professional growth. It's a matter of what the person is capable of, and the appitude
Pria: Sir, I hve heard that without getting a MBA degree, we can even think of getting a good job. What do u have to say about this?
manojchawla: We can use Distance education for Professional Development. e.g. through our platform NIS L.I.V.E. (refer www.live.nissparta.com) we offer programs for working executives , and there are examples of professional growth as a consequence. One can get a good job without MBA.
Tuli: Sir, mostly people prefer to do their management studies from abroad. Is India management institute degrees is any lesser than the management institute abroad?
manojchawla: Indian students prefer to do good management eduction from Indian B-Schools. Only if one does not get through, then an international Management qualification will be useful. Further, if you are clear that you need to work in a MNC across the world, then "international Management qualification" from a reputed institute is a distinct advantage
Sugandha: sir , how far you think different feild of media courses like public relations , advertising , broadcast , and tv production should have management degree course?
manojchawla: Sugandha: like PR/Advertising etc, these are "technical" qualifications. Every industry requires "technical" and "functional" qualifications. As industries grow and mature i.e. healthcare, media etc, such "industry specific" management degrees will be sought
Prague: what about on-the-job training and executive education.Do you think companies have dropped the ball on this? And how dangerous is this for companies coming out of recession?
manojchawla: On the Job(OJT) is critical for skill building. Executive Education is imporatnt for people who need "Additional Qualifications" for career progression. While some companies have dropped ball, we are seeing a trend of the same being reversed, and more companies approaching us. You are right - it is dangerourous to stop investing in people development
Shrikant: what are the opportunities for MBA-IT freshers?
manojchawla: the opportunity for such people would be in IT companies in Business Acquisition, Account Management or even consulting
Ganesh: how we can reach current technology to rural schools / areas?
manojchawla: the current method is through V-Sat based distribution Network which has been already implemented by many Universities (IGNOU, VTU, WBUT amongst others). The Kiosk based CSC model of Village Kioks, promoted by the various state governments is also aimed to be a vehicle for school level education.
Suman111: Since the market is just reviving from the economic slowdown how does it stand for the future MBA who seeks a job in a high profile company? Can they feel comfortable now than it was last year.
manojchawla: In the private sector, there is no "comfort". One needs to work hard to to survice. there is a saying " Every morning in [ProcessingInstruction]Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning a lion wakes up. It knows it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve to death. The moral: It doesn’t matter if you are a lion or a gazelle. When the sun comes up, you better be running"
Rishi: sir i have done my graduation in texile and want to go for further studies abroad. I am getng a research course in textile clothing and fashion. Does a research course is helpful afterward from prospect of job in India?
manojchawla: Your programs n Textile could be useful if you are planning to work in Core Textiles or Garment segment
