Sunil Bhave, Vice President, Fujitsu Consulting India, an IIT/IIM alumnus heads the entire Delivery Management of Fujitsu Consulting India. He shares his first job experience

After having completed my MBA in Systems and Marketing at IIM Lucknow, I was placed through campus placement with Asian Paints, as a Management Trainee in 1989. I joined the Information Systems department of Asian Paints. As a trainee initially my major job responsibilities were to understand business requirements analysis and to design and manage development and implementation.  I was in Asian Paints for about four years. As a Management Trainee Asian Paint’s Information Systems Department, I was drawing a salary of Rs. 3500 per month till I got confirmed as the Junior Executive.

Challenges

In Asian Paints, IT department was a key business enabler and played a pivotal role for the organisation in terms of staying competitive. Asian Paints had a very progressive IT organisation and philosophy related to IT. Providing leading edge to the business within a unique set of constraints and roadblocks of internal IT department was the biggest challenge.

Many organisations look at IT department as a passive ‘order taker’ department. Asian Paints had a different approach. Looking at IT as a true business enabler is something which I picked up quite early during my tenure at the company. I also learned to work with diverse set of business users through focus and determination. It made me understand that through focus and determination you can get through the worst of conditions. These learnings have empowered me throughout my career.

Fond memories

Asian Paints had some of most brilliant persons working in various functions and departments. I got to learn from all my peers and superiors. The work environment was friendly. All of the professionals at Asian Paints were genuine, down-to-earth and yet had solid knowledge in their fields. In many organiaations being flashy is thought to be more important than being knowledgeable and Asian Paints was definitely not one of such organiaations. It would be unfair to single out one incidence or one person. Those four years of my first job were a very good learning experience for me.
