Writers usually complement their work and personality by maintaining their own blogs. In other cases such as Dhimant Parekh’s, a blogger turns to writing. Let us explore the versatile and multifaceted daily life of this blogger cum writer
The ultimate source of satisfaction for a writer is in being read. More the number of readers you win and greater the depth of their reading, more real will be your sense of achievement as a writer. During his initial writing years, Dhimant wrote about things which were mostly familiar only to his friends and family. Over time, he developed his own style – a product of voracious reading of varied works and consistent practice. “I got interested in writing when I first came across a friend's blog. I was fascinated by the idea that anyone could get a personal writing space on the internet. This led to the creation of my blog (www.dhimantparekh.com). I started reading many of the reputed blogs and stumbled upon some fine quality writers, who inspired me,” Dhimant ponders.
From Blogging to Book-ing
The blogger soon turned into an author as he started experimenting with writing short stories a few years ago. Dhimant shares his experience, “I wrote short stories, first as part of my blog. I started working first on story plots, as any amateur writer would. However, I soon discovered that my interest lay more in detailing out character nuances rather than a story line. Training in the highly interactive form of theatre, Playback Theatre, has helped me understand subjects better and provided me with a deeper sensitivity towards the human nature. As a result, initially I wrote ‘Sketch Stories’. A culmination of detailed characterisation and a well-defined plot was my first sketch story, titled "Neumonia". This story was very well received by my readers. Their feedback helped me improve my subsequent works and over a period of one year I had written more than a dozen sketch stories.”

Most emerging authors are impeded by the complexities of stringent publishing procedures and pre-conditions. Dhimant realised that publishing through he traditional mode is almost a Sisyphean task, so he put forward his stories as an e-book. “I collated 10 of my stories into an e-book and put it up for free download on the site www.sketchstories.com. The e-book, titled "Neumonia and Other Sketch Stories", received a huge response and more than a thousand copies have been downloaded in just a couple of months. During this period, I came to know about www.serenewoods.com/ and their self-publishing platform. The concept was an interesting proposition for me and it helped me materialise my dream of publishing a book. They did a great job of making the paperback version of my book available and so far my book has been the top seller on Serene Woods' website. That's a great honour considering that the site boasts of some very good work by upcoming authors.”
A Typical Day
Besides his writing and other interests, Dhimant is also associated with many start-ups. Elucidating further, he states, “I work full-time at a technology start-up, handling product management, which is also something I am passionate about. Part of my day also goes into updating frequently www.thebetterindia.com, an initiative taken by me and my wife to address the lack of positive news in our media and to showcase social and economic developments of India. We search for the positive stories of India and put them up in one place. We have a steadily growing readership with many organisations and individuals using our platform to spread word about the wonderful ways in which they are making a difference. We usually source the content from our partner NGOs and other individuals who get in touch with us. I periodically blog during the week, usually in my spare evenings. Additionally, I manage to squeeze-in time for current affairs magazines and some good literature.”
