To make one’s first job a dream job is on every employee’s wish-list. Let’s take a look at what employees expect from their first job…

It’s indeed a natural and joyous feeling when you get your first appointment letter. Expectations from a first job may vary from individual to individual. Everyone cherishes the dream of being an integral part of a professional fraternity, learning the nuances of their role and applying their skills and insights to achieve desired results. For some, the first job could be what they were striving for to make a career in, for others it could be a stepping stone to their dream job. “The first job is a once in a lifetime event. As a fresher, one is definitely charged with enthusiasm and energy, mingled with anxiety as one enters into a whole new world after college. Making it BIG is definitely on everyone’s mind,” says Rishi Agarwal, head - Systems, Policies, & Processes, Human Resources, Geometric.

Sudheesh Venkatesh, Head - HR, Tesco HSC feels that the first job is a new phase in one’s life which is a culmination of years of dedicated studentship. “New employees arrive on their first day of work excited and eager to begin, but are also concerned about the uncertainties they face in a new environment. It is upto the employer to plan accordingly and make the joining experience for a new hire smooth. He must have an effective induction plan in place,” expresses Venkatesh.

The individuals going in for their first job today belong to Generation Y and have high expectations for personal and financial success. They seek challenging and meaningful jobs that have an impact on their professional world. They do not like being treated as the new kids on the block but as professionals. So what are some of the expectations of an employee from his/her first job? Perhaps it is very normal for an employee to have high expectations and create an imaginary picture about the organisation he/she is about to join. “People have a lot of expectations/anxieties while joining an organisation. They look forward to a welcoming and supporting environment; they want to start getting productive as soon as possible with work which has substance, and look for appreciation for their achievements,” adds Venkatesh.

Adding to this, Amit Roy, CEO, Caretel Infotech, a Delhi based BPO and IT services company says, “The first job is very crucial in one’s life. The main expectations are freedom to exercise the gained knowledge, opportunity to use the skills, working environment, healthy competition as well as recognition.”

While it is true that making the first job a dream job is on most employees’ wish list, what role can organisations play in helping them achieve this dream? “Organisations need to know the nuances of this new generation of employees, as to what excites and  motivates them. They can accordingly devise a strategy to meaningfully keep them engaged.

Some of the factors that can be taken into consideration are – a) Design a comprehensive orientation or on-boarding program, b) Offering more responsibilities, c) Creating a performance based culture, d) Providing flexibility at work, e) Communicating regularly and finding out what they want, f) Building relationships around people,” says Vishal Chibber, HR head, Kelly Services India.

“An employee, on his/her first job, comes with a lot of excitement, openness and willingness. It is the way an organisation handles this that makes it a dream company for him/her. CSC India takes care of its first timers from day one, briefing them about the company and assigning a buddy in case they need any help. This is followed by a detailed mandatory ‘New Employee Celebrations’ to harmonize their self belief,” notes Anuj Kumar, associate director - HR, CSC India, an IT services company.

“As part of our induction program, we have some of our senior management staff address the new inductees and explain the importance of their roles as well as the organisation’s goals and objectives. We also make sure that the new joinees understand the global spread of our organisation and the businesses and markets that we address.

Secondly, we introduce the individual to Tesco’s culture and values, which goes a long way in orienting themselves to the ethos of the organisation. New joinees are also familiarised with the operational aspects such as travel, finance, facilities, infrastructure and other relevant policies to ensure that his/her transition to the organisation is smooth.

Finally, employees are encouraged to set their objectives so that their expectations and organisational goals are aligned and a clear roadmap is set for personal development and career growth,” avers Venkatesh.

The first job always has a ‘Dream Come True’ feeling for every employee. Whatever the route, the right placement along with the right environment can definitely make the first job a dream job. So, what’s stopping you? Start your journey and be prepared for a grand welcome………
