Niketh Sundar, VP HR, UST Global discusses the current employment trends in the IT industry

1) Can you describe the current employment trends in your industry?

As the Indian economy is looking up, talent is back in demand especially in the IT industry. The competition for top end employable talent is increasing by the day. The workforce is highly ambitious and discerning in this scenario. There is a high churn amongst employees, especially those with two to three years of experience. In the Indian context, the current surge that we are seeing is largely influenced by bailout packages that has had the effect of increased outsourcing. Overall, what we see across the industry is that it is “back to basics” time for most organisations faced with challenges in retaining their best talent.

2) What are some of the traits and qualifications you look for in the people you hire?

The key traits that we look for are the candidate’s cultural fit, attitude, ability, adaptability, flexibility and willingness to learn. One recent trend has been to look at Tier 2 and Tier 3 institutions for talent. As an industry, we have begun to look beyond engineering graduates to hire the likes of B Sc Computer Science Graduates. Adaptability and learn-ability are key requirements for candidates in the new job markets.

3) Can you tell us about the special HR practices which your organisation has adopted in order to motivate your employees and retain them.

Communication with our employees is a top priority. From a top down communication perspective, we have a corporate newsletter that goes out at noon every day (aptly called
News@Noon) to all associates across the globe. This e-newsletter keeps the associates informed about key events and updates happening across our company. We encourage bottom up communication through forums like MeetUS@4 (where associates in groups of 20 can meet a panel of leaders on a daily basis) and “Meet The Leader” (where employees can meet the leaders without prior appointment).

4) What are some of the challenges HR professionals face in this industry?

· Understanding fast changing technology and the business
· Creating career frameworks for employees in organisations
· Balancing the needs of employees with the competitive realities of the business
· Project Management for HR professionals
