An effective manager has a significant impact on an employee's engagement level and overall image of the company

According to a research conducted by the Kenexa Research Institute (KRI), a division of Kenexa, a global provider of business solutions for human resources, an immediate manager has more influence on his/her employees beyond their role as delegator, evaluator and motivator. The results suggest that an employee's view of his/her immediate manager has a significant impact on their engagement level and overall views of the company.

The results indicate that 68% of subordinate employees in India rate their managers as effective, compared to the global rating of 60%. Employees in Brazil (61%) report the second highest ratings of managerial effectiveness, followed by those in the United States (60%), Russia (57%), Canada (56%) and China (53%). Workers in France (41%) reported the lowest ratings.

“Effective managers are respectful, considerate and fair, as well as good organisers who can clearly communicate work expectations and provide feedback. While this is easy to grasp conceptually, many managers struggle with implementation but for those who get it, there are large benefits," says Jack Wiley, executive director, Kenexa Research Institute.

Additionally, those employees who are satisfied with their managers state a much higher intention to stay with the organisation versus those who are dissatisfied. Those who rate their managers as good also feel they have a promising future with the company and have confidence in the organisation's future. “An effective manager helps in providing the strategic advantage towards increasing organisational productivity through employee engagement. Broadly this involves - offering accelerated coaching and career support, cultivating relationships, and holding employees accountable for results by being clear about their expectations right at the start,” notes Partha Patnaik, GM-HR & Admin-Four Soft.

“Good managers don’t just steer teams towards meeting its objectives but also lead, inspire and look after people under them. Managers have to develop a positive attitude in the employee towards the organisation and its values. Managers who are able to create an all-around engaging work climate can have an invaluable effect on an employee's commitment to a company, and it is a well known fact that committed employees perform better,” says Vivek Kotru, Senior Marketing Manager, Geometric.

Employees' evaluations of their managers are driven by the extent to which the manager displays the fundamentals of managerial competence: doing a good job at managing the team's work and the team itself, and being perceived as a leader. So, what do good managers mean to their employees? “Good managers to employees are those who provide them with honest and unbiased evaluation, constant feedback and who are a powerhouse of knowledge. S/he should be able to lead and motivate in the right direction. Employees appreciate managers who practice two-way communication, delegate authority with responsibility and are able to provide members with a clear career path,” says Harsh Hada, Executive Director, Web Development Company.

“The key to having an engaged employee is to understand what motivates them. There are four broad factors that keep an employee engaged and motivated in their professional life – pay, promotion, career development, and fair treatment. An effective manager ensures that these factors are properly identified and understood for each team member and strategies to address these are formed early,” adds Patnaik.

A good manger will ensure that the employee remains satisfied and motivated by focusing on key variables like specific job goals, level of job difficulty and work-efficacy. The often heard saying is that ‘employees leave their managers and not their organisation.’ Whatever the route, having a good manager is extremely important to ensure that employees remain engaged and add the most value to the organisation.
