International Labour Organisation, in its report ‘Global Employment Trends 2009’ points out that globally, an “optimistic” scenario for 2009 would result in an increase of the number of unemployed by 18 million people in comparison with 2007, and this number may well rise to 30 million or more if it takes more time for financial markets to stabilise than is envisaged by decision makers.

Scope and opportunity

While IT still remains a choice of the masses, the youth is now hunting down various paths of IT. One such option which is IT at its base but innovative yet recession proof at the surface is the Networking and Hardware industry. Ravi Dighe, national head, N-Power, the Hardware & Networking training wing of Aptech Limited talks about careers in the industry, “Job profiles in the Hardware and Networking industries include a range of services from basic H-W infrastructure setup to Networking to Information Security management. To cite a few examples of types of jobs available there are helpdesk executives or PC support executives, network administrators, systems engineers and so on. At higher levels, there are messaging specialists and migration specialists. Career opportunities are rife with a broad range of recruiters in sectors such as the BPOs, ITES, Telecom, Banking, Finance, Insurance, Media, entertainment and the education sector, in addition to the core hardware and networking product manufacturers and AMC (Annual Maintenance Contract) vendors.”

N-Power has tied up recently with Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) to launch a 3-Year B.Sc. degree in Hardware, Networking & Digital Communication (HNDC) and 1-Yr Diploma in Hardware & Networking (HN). They combine “formal theoretical education” with “hands-on work experience” through internships to produce an “Industry Ready Professional”.

Appeal of the industry

The youth today wants to trace a challenging career path. The Networking and Hardware industry offers all of it and more. Sushant Khurana, working for TruKnox Technologies shares his own experience, “During my B.Tech, I obtained a diploma from new horizons in RHCE (Red Hat Certified Engineer) that allows you to become a Linux System Administrator. This industry appeals to most youngsters because it has immense scope for becoming a hacker. The thrill and the excitement of handling intricate security aspects is incredible.”

So what makes India a promising hub for Hardware & Networking Industry? Dighe sums up, “India is very high on the agenda of International Organisations in this field. Firstly, India can cater to the requirements of many countries in Asia Pacific, Middle East Etc. for supply of products, services and manpower. It enjoys added benefits of low manufacturing cost. Thirdly, India has already established its brand equity ‘as an IT talent supplier to the world’. We have the largest engineering candidate pool. These factors draw foreign investors to India. Government policies are in favour of private participation and leveraging the investments made in IT Infrastructure during last 5 years or so. This points to an even better trend in future!”
